INSTAGRAM GIVEAWAYS:DO THEY ACTUALLY WORK?
Giveaways on Instagram are a popular tactic to grow followers. But are they really worth the money, time, and effort? Instagram giveaways, which are one of the largest growth strategies that are still widely used now. With these different aspects outlined below, you can decide what works best for you, your company, and your long-term success on Instagram.
Though, Instagram is evolving at a fast pace. We must always keep up. You’ll need a thorough grasp of how Instagram functions in order to make the most of your time and efforts.
Understand Instagram’s Algorithm First
To begin with, we must understand how Instagram functions in order to understand why some giveaways fail.
Instagram protects against spam, fake accounts, and purchasing likes or followers. Anyone with enough money may purchase followers from a wide range of sources. It takes Instagram a long time and a lot of effort to locate and remove fake accounts due to the expansion of followers-purchasing.
Instagram therefore depends on its algorithm rather than just the practice of discovering and removing spam accounts. Mainly to enhance user experience, but it also serves as an automated filter. This filter prevents anything that isn’t genuine (and not the best quality) from getting to the top by this filter.
The algorithm on Instagram is always being tweaked and improved to guard against spam-like behaviour because it is still difficult to distinguish between actual followers and fake (ghost) followers.
The way followers interact is the best indicator of whether they are genuine or fake.
That’s why the algorithm is heavily centred on engagement. Note that it’s engagement rather than the number of followers you have. And percentages are used to measure the engagement. If you pay attention, you’ll notice this change on Instagram. Even if you have excellent posts, not everyone will see your posts just because you have a large number of followers.

Instagram Giveaways Come in Two Forms
Yes, giveaways still work. In fact, there is only one kind of giveaway that will work, so let’s talk about the difference between these two types of Instagram giveaways:
- Large Generic Giveaways
- Small Niche-Specific Giveaways
Large Generic Giveaways (LGG)
An example of LGGs is when you offer your followers the chance to win an iPad, cash, gift cards, or other prizes to increase your followers. The effect is you’ll unintentionally garner “ghost” followers. They are real people, they just aren’t your people.
In order to participate in the giveaway, they followed, although they had no interest in you or your brand. You now may have more followers, but your engagement rate has reduced as a result of these new followers. They hinder your success rather than enhancing it as you had planned, making it harder for you to sustain.
Small Niche-Specific Giveaways (SNG)
SNGs, on the other hand, can be worthwhile. The example of a giveaway that may be successful for you is as follows:
- something that would precisely appeal to the target audience you want to draw
- something that would not be appealing to others who are not interested in your target niche.
Benefits Include the Following:
- Much more likely to attract followers who are enthusiastic about your brand and business.
- The giveaway will not only reward your existing followers but also draw in new ones who are interested in your brand and are more likely to interact with your future postings.
- As a bonus, these Instagram giveaways can frequently be a collaboration, creating a connection with another brand/business.
- Even without a collaboration, the giveaway will almost certainly cost less than the LGGs.
Be Careful
Despite the fact that there are four possible advantages of small, niche-specific giveaways, use them cautiously. Giveaway is still a method of artificial growth. People are being encouraged to click “follow” in the hopes of winning something. By doing this, you may still attract followers who aren’t genuinely interested in what you post. However, because you are concentrating on your niche, it will make it easier for people with similar interests to locate your brand/business. We believe that, when used sparingly, the advantages marginally exceed the drawbacks.
Examples of Instagram Giveaways That Might Be Useful
- Potentially helpful: Baby monitors or storage containers that are safe for toddlers might help promote a baby-product brand/business.
- Not helpful: Gift cards to a Hypermarket. Although that is something your followers would undoubtedly like, it is not a nice giving item. There are a billion people out there who would love to win a gift card. You may attract those who are uninterested in baby-products.
How Do You Benefit from Instagram Giveaways?
Let’s say you’re a Lighting company that sells chandeliers. You want to draw in people who are considering purchasing one. It makes perfect sense to host a giveaway to win a product that you offer. It’s a win-win situation! As long as you are giving away something you create and/or sell, giveaways should certainly be in your toolbox of growth strategies. Your giveaways must always be brand specific.
If you’re a brand and business that has products and services to offer, giveaways are the number one way to grow your Instagram followers and enhance your brand awareness.
Examples
If you are a:
- Photographer: Offer a complimentary photoshoot.
- Massage therapist: Give out a complimentary massage.
- Pillow-maker: Give away a free cushion.
- If you have an online course that teaches anything, offer a free course or subscription.
However, for an influencer, the greatest strategy to attract new followers is to put in the time and effort necessary to create and deliver high-quality content.
